Tanzania is a large country lying just below the equator in East Africa. Vast stretches of plains and plateaux contrast with spectacular relief features, notably Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres), and the world’s second deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika (1,436 metres deep). The country also includes the Indian Ocean islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.
The main safaris circuits can be divided into the north (The Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara) and the south (The Selous and Ruaha). Whilst it is possible to visit both, time and budget restraints mean that you are more likely to choose one or the other and then perhaps include some relaxing time on a beautiful Indian Ocean beach.
Large herds of wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, buffalo, gazelles, elands, dik-diks, and kudu are found in most of the country’s game parks. Predators include hyenas, wild dogs, and the big cats—lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Crocodiles and hippos are common on riverbanks and lakeshores and small bands of chimpanzees inhabit Gombe National Park along Lake Tanganyika. Nearly 1,500 varieties of birds have been reported.
Most tourists choose the northern circuit where the wildlife is outstanding and it’s possible to witness one of wildlife’s most amazing spectacles – the Great Migration which sees more than two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle travel through the Serengeti from Kenya’s Masai Mara, following the rains south to give birth.
However, the fame of the north can often overshadow the south, which in our view is one of East Africa’s best kept secrets. If you’re a seasoned safari-goer, or prefer a more secluded, back-to-basics safari experience, southern Tanzania offers a true authentic bush experience.
