UK summer is one of the best times to visit Kenya (from July to September) as this is the main dry season, which also coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra.
During the rainy season you will find fewer visitors and you can admire the lush, emerald vegetation.
November / December in particular is a great time to travel to Kenya, since the rains are short and you may have the chance to see newborn animals and migratory bird species. Only the peak of the ‘long rains’ in March and April are very wet and this is when some of the camps may close for the season.
Kenya is the most wonderful country for an African safari and this trip offers guests the trip of a lifetime with its unforgettable combination of scenery, superb game viewing, excellent hospitality and conservation education.
Lewa has one of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya including 12% of the country’s black and white rhinos. The Conservancy is also home to herds of elephants and buffalo, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, more than 400 species of birds and if lucky, a pack of wild dogs.
Cottar's 1920 Camp is vintage luxury at its finest. The Cottar family provide genuinely stunning wildlife and wilderness experiences, engaging in the original spirit and essence of ‘safari’: an abundance of wildlife, a guarantee of privacy, and the highest standards of professional guiding, in a luxurious and authentic safari environment.
Snorkel the offshore coral reef in Ngalawa (local African boats)
or take a traditional dhow sailing boat trip on the Indian Ocean waves. Other activities include golf at a nearby 18 hole golf course, kite surfing, diving, safaris - even docile whale sharks in the ocean and the elephants in the hills are there for the asking.
Day by day itinerary
Day 1 - The Emakoko, Nairobi National Park
The Emakoko is the perfect place to start or finish a safari. You are in the bush and on safari within 30 minutes of leaving the airport.
The Emakoko is a family owned and managed lodge. Emma and Anthony Childs have run lodges in some of the wildest and most beautiful parts of Kenya.
The Lodge is situated on 15 acres of land bordering the National Park, a twenty-bed luxury lodge artfully built into the side of a valley on the Mbagathi River, which borders the Nairobi National Park. Entrance to it is through the park, which is an ideal way to escape the Nairobi traffic.
Great care has been taken to incorporate the beautiful fig trees which grow on the cliff where the lodge is situated. All rooms look straight over the river and into the Park. There are 10 luxury classic safari cottages set on a hillside overlooking the Mbagathi River and with the city of Nairobi not able to be seen. The cottages are very spacious, and have a veranda with a view of the river and ravine below; feature fireplace with fire lit on request; large integrated bathrooms with his and hers, walk in shower and a bath tub with a view. Rooms are double or twin, and are very
large and can comfortably take 2 extra beds. There is a pool, with a deck and sun beds and barbecue and curry area/pizza oven.
Day 2-4 - Sirikoi Lodge, Lewa Conservancy
Lewa Conservancy has its roots in the Craig family who have farmed here with the philosophy that there would always be room for wildlife. As the plight of the black rhino became desperate in Africa, the ranch was converted into a rhino sanctuary and today Lewa spans 61,000 acres, and is home to over 11 percent of Kenya’s black rhino population, and over 14 percent of Kenya’s white rhino population and the world’s largest single population of Grevy’s zebra.
With its proven track record, the Lewa model of community-based conservation development is being spearheaded across northern Kenya, and emulated by other East African conservation organisations. In late June 2013, the World Heritage Committee extended the boundaries of the Mount Kenya World Heritage Site to include Lewa and Ngare Ndare Forest.
Day 5-7 - Cottars 1920's Safari Camp, Maasai Mara Reserve
Located in the south east of the Maasai Mara and bordering the Serengeti National Park and Loliondo reserves, the Cottar 1920’s camp is within a 22,000 acre exclusive concession.
The Cottar Safari tradition began in 1919 with the arrival in Kenya of the American White Hunter, Charlie Cottar from Oklahoma, USA. Extending an era of luxury and quality the Cottars 1920’s Camp returns to the original spirit and essence of the safari, reminiscent of a golden era; an era of romance, professional guiding, adventure and elegance. Situated in such a large area, guests are almost guaranteed exclusivity on game drives in a region of prolific wildlife.
The tents are furnished with 1920’s antiques, all with en-suite dressing rooms with canvas baths and bucket showers. Activities include day and night game drives, bush walks, swimming, fishing, bush meals and massages.
The camp accommodates up to 16 guests in authentic, spacious white canvas tents, each one with a canopied veranda and carefully located to ensure privacy. Each tent is elegantly furnished with safari antiques from the 1920’s, private en suite dressing rooms and safari-style bucket showers.
The camp is equipped with a library and reading room. By bush standards, the cuisine and service is of the highest quality.
Guides take guests on walks through the bush to experience close encounters with wildlife.
Day 8-13 - Alfajiri Beach Villa, Diani Beach
This African design villa with high makuti roofs, located few steps away from the beach, offers the ultimate in beachfront luxury. Designed to feel like a home away from home, the villa is decorated with handmade hardwood furnishings, and is surrounded by lush palm gardens for maximum privacy.
Sea breezes gently flow through the open living area under a makuti roof, okra floor, wooden beams and impressive artifacts. Your private overflowing swimming pool sits right in front of your veranda merging into the ocean and the horizon.
The concept is as you please! Private dining served al fresco or in your villa - your choice, as too is the cuisine. All meals and drinks including local and imported brands of alcohol are included in the rates.
Alfajiri is privately owned and managed by the warm and welcoming Italian team of Fabrizio and Marica, where you arrive as guests and leave as friends. We are renowned for our service and food experiences, long and lazy meals are one of our signature experiences.
The Beach Villa is open all year and your butler is on hand to look after you from start to finish.
