Day 2 - Yangon

Meet the past on a river boat! Today you will have a full day excursion on the Twante Canal to the Ayeyarwady Delta. George Orwell spent his days here in the Colonial Service and wrote his furious novel "Burmese Days": Love scorned. You will spend time at the potters and the weavers and see the big golden pagoda travelling by horse cart or rickshaw.

Day 3 - Bagan

Early morning flight to Bagan (80 minutes). Full day visit to the world's largest temple and pagoda complex. Stay for 3 nights in Bagan.

Day 4 - Bagan

Today you will have another full and rewarding day in and around Bagan. In the evening you will attend the traditional marionette theatre (string puppets).

Day 5 - Bagan

Full day excursion to the steep cragged (flower rock) Mount Popa. This volcanic plug, known as Popa (Sanskrit = flower), is sacred to the Burmese as "Olympus of their Buddhas and spirits". Stairs lead you to the peak of this "stone flower" which is covered with temples and shrines. Then you will spend two hours travelling the plains with Palmyra palms (a delicious palm wine is made here) enjoy a wine tasting before you return to Bagan.

Day 6 - Monywa

Two mighty rivers determine this day: at Pakokku you cross the Ayeyarwady and at Pakangyi you cross the Chidwin whose course you will follow until you reach Monywa - a full day trip away from tourist crossed roads in pristine pastoral Burma. Stay in Monywa for one night.

Day 7 - Mandalay

Today you will cross the Chidwin by boat and will be taken to the caves of Powindaung by pickups. The Powindaung Caves are home to grand moments of sacred art in cave temples. In the afternoon you will continue to Sagaing, an important centre of meditation. Stop at Kyaukka, famous for its lacquerware (you will stop and visit a local artist). In the evening you will reach Mandalay where you will stay for 2 nights.

Day 8 - Mandalay

Discover Mandalay at leisure with a full day visit of Burma's last royal city where the last Burmese dynasty had to surrender at the end of the 19th century when the British expanded their Colonial Empire. Mandalay's variety of sights is impressive - visit the country's biggest and most beautiful golden Buddha, the largest Marble Buddha and even go treasure hunting in the city's manifold quaint boutiques. You will also visit the nearby royal city of Amarapura with its many temples and the world's longest teakwood bridge. Experience a wonderful sunset cruise from a small boat near the bridge.

Day 9 - Lake Inle

Today you will travel the Ayeyarwady for 1 hour upstream to Mingun where a mighty king once tried to build the world's biggest pagoda - and failed. Yet even the dimension of his failure is still impressive. In the afternoon you will take a half-hour flight to Heho on the Shan plateau toward the Thai border where the Shan people have their settlements. Another hour on from here and you will reach lake Inle where you will stay for 2 nights.

Day 10 - Lake Inle

Today you will spend the day on a boat visiting floating gardens, villages, markets and pagodas - the floating world of the Intha, the famous leg-rowing fishermen. In the afternoon you will take small boats to the fantastic scenery of the Shan pagodas at In Dein.

Day 11 - Bago

Change of scenery today. In the morning you will take a flight from Heho to Yangon and on to the former domain of the Mon people, Bago. Once the centre of the empire of Mon, Bago is home to extraordinary sights - the biggest reclining Buddha, the highest golden Pagoda and see Kyaikpun where four colossal Buddhas protect the four points of the compass. Stay here for 1 night.

Day 11 - Mt. Kyaiktiyo

Today you will drive south through teak and rubber plantations to the Golden Rock of Kyaikhtiyo. After half an hour by truck and a 1 hour climb you will reach the peak and enjoy magnificent views. This gold plated boulder is perched on a crest, and, according to legend, held only by strand of Buddha's hair which prevents it from tumbling down! Accommodation here for 1 night.

Day 13 - Yangon

Early start to see the unforgettable sunrise before your return trip to Yagon. There will be plenty of photo opportunities en route. Overnight for your final night in Yangon.

Day 14 - Yangon

Today there will be time for individual sightseeing or shopping. Do not miss the huge Bogyoke Market with its arts and trinkets. Afternoon transfer to the airport for your return flight home.
